The most popular and effective whole house cleaners in Canadian homes are undoubtedly high-efficiency particulate arrestance (HEPA) air cleaners. The roots of the HEPA filter can be traced back to the Second World War when it was developed by the Atomic Energy Commission as a way to eliminate harmful and hazardous radioactive dust particles from the atmosphere. HEPA filters are generally considered to be the most effective type of air filtration systems available when it comes to creating contamination-free environments. The filters are designed to remove all types of infectious agents, foreign and heavy metal particles, and a wide variety of other contaminants.
A filter must be certified to be called a true HEPA. The certification means the filter can eliminate at least 99.7 percent of all particles which are 0.3 micron in size and larger, during the first pass of air flowing through it. In fact, the dirtier a HEPA filter is, the more efficient it works. Canadians may be interested to know that not all HEPA filters are considered to be True HEPA filters. For instance, high alpha, commercial, and hospital grade HEPA filters may only be able to eliminate 95 percent of 0.3 micron particles. While these types of filters may be less expensive, they’re not as efficient as True HEPA filters.
In addition, all whole-house HEPA air cleaners aren’t the same even though they may contain a True HEPA filter. Some systems allow air gaps because the seal between the cabinet and filter isn’t tight enough. Some well-known HEPA brands may work at just 85 per cent efficiency regardless of what their advertising and packaging may lead you to believe. A HEPA air cleaner is connected to a building’s return air duct and diverts as much dirty air as possible which travels through the heating/cooling system through a multi-stage filtration system several times per hour.
A good HEPA air cleaner is needed since indoor pollution levels may be worse than the outdoor air. A basic electronic air cleaner alone isn’t strong enough to filter the millions of dirt particles which can be found inside a home on a daily basis. A True HEPA filter can also trap radioactive dust and biological contaminants. The air quality is much safer for those who suffer from asthma, allergies and/or respiratory ailments and your housekeeping efforts will be drastically reduced. The air cleaners are ideal for new home and those under renovation as the filters can help eliminate excessive odours and dust from paints and construction materials etc.
