It’s quiet, it’s clean, it’s efficient and it warms your room from the floor up… it’s a radiant floor heating system. While this style of heating has been around since the early Romans, with modern technology it is growing in popularity. Previously a system that needed to be installed during the construction phase, radiant floor heat can now be added after the fact or while replacing your current system. With all of the benefits that a radiant floor heating system has to offer it’s easy to see why it is considered one of the most effective ways to heat your home.
Lloyd HVAC of Toronto is proud to offer Rehau Radiant Heating Systems, the leader in floorheating Hydronics.
What is a Radiant Floor Heating System?
There are two types of radiant floor heating systems:
- Hydronic systems – These systems are efficient for heating your whole house. It warms your home by running hot water through tubing (usually PEX) under your floors. The water which is heated by a boiler to temperatures of 100 to 120 degrees heats your house from the bottom up. Any type of floor covering may be used with a hydronic system, although some recommend avoiding hardwood due to warping.
- Electric systems – These systems are more commonly used to heat single rooms as opposed to whole homes as they are more of a supplemental heating source. This system is often used under tile floors in kitchens and bathrooms. It is comprised of loops of resistance wire that is run on top of the subfloor. While stone and ceramic tile are the most popular floor finishes to use with electric systems there are fittings for laminate and manufactured hardwood.
Benefits of Radiant Floor Heating Systems
Radiant floor heating provides a steady temperature to your home. The heat generated under the floor continuously runs at the same temperature eliminating the constant increase and decrease that you experienced with a forced air system. With traditional systems the temperature in your room rises until it reaches your desired level and shuts off, causing your room to feel colder than it is until it reaches the point of kicking your heat on again. Radiant floor heat maintains a constant temperature without the constant switching on and off.
With a radiant floor heating system, you will no longer have the added noise in your home of the furnace kicking on and off. Your heating system is quietly at work for you both day and night. And, while eliminating the noise of the forced air system you also eliminate the amount of dust and allergens that are circulating through the air in your home, helping to keep you and your family healthier.
You will be equally warm anywhere that you are in your room. With traditional heating systems, you often find pockets in a room, near vents and registers, where you feel the heat more and other pockets in your room of cold air, where the heat doesn’t reach as well. Radiant floor heat spreads the heat evenly throughout your floor resulting in even heat distribution to your room and furnishings. Since the heat is starting at the floor it is warming the areas of your home that you and your family use.
While the upfront costs of a radiant floor heating system can be as much as 50% more than a traditional forced air system, in the long run, it will save you money. You are heating your room from where you are standing, which allows most people to keep lower temperatures and still feel warmer in their room. This helps to lower your heating costs and over time, you will save money by installing a radiant floor heating system.
